Motivational Interviewing

Programs & Courses

Motivational Interviewing training for helping professionals who want better conversations about change.

Whether the work happens in education, coaching, healthcare, leadership, social services, HR, or another people-centered setting, our programs and courses are designed to help professionals listen more skillfully, respond with more clarity, and support change without slipping into fixing, persuading, or power struggles.

Why
motivational interviewing?

Many helping professionals are expected to support change without ever being shown how to have change conversations well. Motivational Interviewing offers a more effective way to respond when people feel stuck, uncertain, resistant, discouraged, or ambivalent.

Instead of pushing harder or rushing to solutions, learners develop a more collaborative, focused, and autonomy-supportive way of talking about change. These skills will help you evoke your client’s, patient’s, student’s, colleague’s, or member’s reason for change.

Who these courses are for

These courses are designed to help professionals across a wide range of roles, including teachers, faculty, advisors, coaches, supervisors, health and wellness professionals, therapists, case managers, HR and people operations staff, peer supporters, managers, and others who regularly have conversations in which change matters.

The curriculum is not limited to clinical settings. It is designed for real-world conversations in which motivation, stuckness, uncertainty, and behavior change unfold over time.

Programs

Many people we encounter express a desire to explore motivational interviewing as deeply as possible. This growing interest can be attributed to its increasing use across various industries each year. When individuals first learn these skills and experience their effectiveness, they are often eager to immerse themselves in mastering them, applying them, and helping others. Whether you are looking to learn the basics, gain confidence in using motivational interviewing in daily practice, or aspire to join the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), we have a program that meets your needs.

Evoking Change Institute offers two MI Practitioner Program pathways for helping professionals who want a complete three-level learning arc in Motivational Interviewing. Both pathways include the full Level 1 through Level 3 curriculum; the difference is the amount of support, coaching, coding, and facilitation development built around that learning experience.

Core Program

Helping professionals who want the full MI skill arc for their own role and conversations. This comprehensive program will equip you with the skills to use motivational interviewing with your patients, clients, students, or customers.

  • MI Courses: Levels 1 - 3

  • Private coaching

  • Access to the MI practice community

Build a complete foundation in MI and use it more confidently in everyday and higher-stakes conversations.

Courses

Each level is also available as a stand-alone course for learners who want a focused entry point rather than a full practitioner program.

Evoking Change Institute offers a three-level motivational interviewing arc for helping professionals who want to learn the skills stage by stage. At a glance, you can look at Level 1 as the foundational skills you can use in everyday life; Level 2 as using skills with intention; and Level 3 as putting everything together in a full MI helping conversation.

If a full program isn't in the cards for you right now, we welcome you to join others in an individual course.

Level 1
Everyday MI Foundations

A practical, experiential introduction to motivational interviewing for helping professionals who want better everyday conversations at work and at home.

Level 1 helps learners build a clear map of MI, understand MI spirit, begin using OARS, and recognize ambivalence, change talk, sustain talk, and readiness for change at a foundational level.

Level 2
Guiding with Intention

Level 2 is where learners move from general MI-flavored conversations to a more intentional use of MI in real-change conversations.

The course focuses on hearing DARN-CAT in real time, intentionally evoking change talk, responding skillfully to sustain talk and discord, and guiding conversations with greater clarity and collaboration.

Level 3
Full MI Conversations

Level 3 is the most integrative course in the sequence. Learners practice fuller end-to-end MI conversations using scaling questions, Ask-Offer-Ask, stage-matching, planning, relapse responses, flexibility of moving back and forth within the MI tasks and stages of change, and structured self-assessment through a MICA-informed lens.

Motivational Interviewing Skills Coaching &
Private Lessons

Give yourself a space to slow down, practice MI on real conversations, and get focused feedback from a MICA‑trained coach. These 1:1 sessions are designed for any helping professional who wants to feel more confident, more effective, and more aligned with the spirit of motivational interviewing.

Both the Advanced and Core programs include varying degrees of private skills coaching. If you're looking to hone in on specific skills, talk MI, or receive coded, measurable feedback, click below to see which option is the best fit.

Free Practice & Community

In MI, it’s been shown that a single workshop, class, or webinar isn’t enough to become a proficient practitioner. It involves initial learning, followed by further skill refinement through practice, discussion, and feedback.

Evoking Change Institute offers two free ways to hone your MI skills. For practitioners, we recommend the Weekly MI Practice; for those currently facilitating or training MI, we encourage you to join Faciliator Fridays. Oh, and did we mention you don't even need to be an enrolled student at Evoking Change Institute to use either space?

Weekly MI Practice

Workshops, trainings, and intensives are all wonderful places to learn MI. The real sharpening of skills comes from applying conversations and stumbling. â€‹This is a place to try new things, work on your MI skills, and connect with helping professionals from all over the world.

Together we will:

  • Role-play, real-play, and/or drill skills

  • Connect with other MI practitioners to share best practices

  • Work with others of all skill levels to learn, grow, and adapt

  • Find your voice and style as an MI practitioner

Facilitator Fridays

The weekly, free get-together is a virtual teacher’s lounge where MI facilitators and trainers share best practices, challenges, and successes.

Together we will:

  • Honor our stumbles and successes: Share the "sticky" situations we face in our facilitations and navigate through them together. Celebrate successes, whether they feel “bite-sized” or “massive.”

  • Practice without a pedestal: Explore, play with, and perhaps try out new approaches, perspectives, and skills through no-pressure debriefs and role-play and real-play.

  • Evoke our wisdom in the room: Sharing tips, skills, tools, and breakthroughs with one another.

What feels most
important right now?

As with any new language or skill, it takes time, effort, and intentional practice. No matter where you are on your journey with motivational interviewing, we have an option available. If you're looking to connect with others, get specific coaching or coded feedback on your skills, or are looking to dip your toe in the water to see if MI is for you, we will accommodate.

If you aren't sure which path to focus on right now, schedule a call, and we'll work together to find the right option.
