Full MI Conversations
MI Level 3

Level 3 is where Motivational Interviewing comes together in fuller, end-to-end conversations. It is designed for people who already know the foundations and want to use MI with greater flexibility, judgment, and skill in complex, emotionally charged, or non-linear conversations.

The emphasis is not on sounding polished or performing MI mechanically. The emphasis is on staying collaborative, empathic, guiding without taking over, and supporting the other person’s autonomy throughout the conversation.

Quick Facts:

  • 6 live Zoom classes, 3 hours each

  • 18 total instructional hours

  • Advanced level; prior MI training recommended, ideally Level 2 or equivalent.

  • Weekly MI Practice

  • Built for helping professionals across sectors

Why Level 3?

Level 3 is the most integrative course in the MI Practitioner series. It brings together all the elements that make for a successful motivational interview: partnership, evoking, guiding, expressing empathy, and supporting autonomy & activation, along with strategic responses to both change talk and sustain talk.

Earlier levels focus on learning and practicing MI in parts. Level 3 focuses on applying MI flexibly and coherently across the full arc of a conversation. It also serves as a bridge toward coaching, recording review, coding-informed feedback, and advanced practitioner development.

Full helping conversations

By the end of Level 3, participants leave with a more integrated and flexible use of Motivational Interviewing than they had in Levels 1 and 2.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

points (3).png

Conduct fuller MI conversations that move flexibly through engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning in realistic, role-based contexts.

points (3).png

Use scaling questions and readiness rulers to draw out Desire, Ability, Reasons, Need, and Activation rather than simply assessing readiness.

points (3).png

Share information, feedback, options, or advice using Ask-Offer-Ask in a way that preserves partnership and supports autonomy.

points (3).png

Match MI responses more skillfully to different stages of change without rigidly or formulaically applying the stages.

points (3).png

Respond to difficult sustain talk and discord using amplified reflections, double-sided reflections, shifting focus, and reframing.

points (3).png

Recognize when a conversation is ready for planning, consolidate commitment in MI-consistent ways, and keep planning person-owned rather than helper-driven.

points (3).png

Respond to relapse, discouragement, or setbacks by backing up to earlier MI processes when needed and re-engaging around what matters now.

Who this is for

Level 3 is designed for people who have already learned most of MI and can practice and use it in their daily lives. It is especially well-suited for educators, advisors, coaches, supervisors, health and wellness professionals, peer supporters, therapists, case managers, and other helpers who regularly have conversations where movement toward change matters.

Level 3 is for helping professionals who already have a working foundation in:

points (3).png

Recognizing and emdobying the MI spirit

points (3).png

Can hear and strategically respond to change talk and sustain talk

points (3).png

Knowing where they are in an MI conversation based on the 4 processes

points (3).png

Guide conversations with more focus while still honoring autonomy

Level 3 assumes prior exposure to MI through practice and use, ideally through our Level 2 or an equivalent intermediate training. Not sure if you’re ready for Level 3? Contact us, and we'll find the right fit together.

What’s included

Level 3 is designed as six live Zoom classes, three hours each, for a total of 18 instructional hours. Like Level 2, it follows a practice-forward format with short teaching segments, demonstrations, structured listening drills, breakout practice, observer feedback, and between-class micro-experiments rather than long lecture blocks.

Full MI Conversations Level 3 Course

Level 3 is where motivational interviewing comes together in fuller, end-to-end conversations. It is designed for people who already know the foundations and want to use MI with greater flexibility, judgment, and skill in complex, emotionally charged, or non-linear conversations.

Class Overview:

Class 1: From Skills to Full Conversations

Reflect on what has shifted since earlier levels, where confidence still wobbles, and how to move from practicing skills in parts to conducting fuller MI conversations in real contexts.

Class 2: Scaling Questions and Ask-Offer-Ask

Use importance, confidence, and readiness rulers to evoke motivation, then follow up with questions that elicit DARN language, and share information using Ask-Offer-Ask in an autonomy-supportive way.

Class 3: Stage-Matching and Advanced Responding to Sustain Talk and Discord

Revisit the Stages of Change as a practical guide for matching responses and practice advanced reflection tools for more difficult sustain talk and discord.

Class 4: Planning and Consolidating Commitment

Recognize when a conversation has enough momentum to begin planning and use MI-consistent planning moves such as summaries, menus of options, confidence checks, and collaborative next-step questions.

Class 5: Relapse, Backing Up, and Staying MI-Consistent

Participants use OARS with more precision and practice, helping conversations stay focused when several possible concerns are present.

Class 6: Full-Arc MI Conversations, Feedback, and Integration

Conduct fuller MI conversations that draw on Levels 1, 2, and 3, use a simple MICA-informed observation or self-assessment process, and identify next-step goals for continued MI development.

Our approach to training

This course is built on the idea that MI grows through observation, rehearsal, feedback, and reflection over time. That means participants are not just learning concepts; they are practicing how to listen differently, respond differently, and guide conversations differently in ways that transfer back into their real roles.

Level 3 includes six live Zoom sessions and works best when learners can attend consistently and practice between classes. Because this is a skill-development course, participants get the most from it when they come ready to engage, experiment, and reflect rather than perform.
