Motivational Interviewing for Modern Schools

Helping educators
have conversations
that evoke real change.

Training, coaching, and implementation support in

motivational interviewing and the stages of change so your staff can move beyond “fixing” talks to real, student-driven change.

What is Motivational Interviewing?

A collaborative way to talk about change

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a person-centered, evidence-based approach to guiding conversations about change. Instead of telling students what to do, MI helps them explore their own motivations, values, and goals, tapping into the intrinsic drive that makes change stick.

In schools, MI gives educators, advisors, counselors, and leaders a structured way to respond when students are ambivalent, resistant, or “checked out.” By pairing MI with the stages of change, staff learn how to match their approach to a student’s readiness, so conversations feel more respectful, less confrontational, and more likely to lead to follow-through.

You don’t need to become a therapist to use MI. You need a handful of practical skills and a mindset shift: from convincing and fixing to partnering and evoking.

Change the Conversation

Transform how your
school talks about change

Motivational Interviewing helps educators guide conversations that respect students’ motivations, build engagement, and improve outcomes. Staff learn practical skills to foster meaningful, lasting change in daily interactions.

Using MI and the stages of change, schools create respectful, student-centered conversations. Educators gain practical skills, confidence, and tools to improve attendance, engagement, and retention across programs.

MI equips educators with skills to guide students toward meaningful change, engagement, and better outcomes through structured, respectful conversations.

The Process

How we work with your school

Every partnership is customized, but most follow a simple, four-step arc.

01

Discover

We start with a conversation about your context, your students, and where hard conversations are getting stuck attendance, behavior, probation, re-enrollment, or another challenge.

02

Design

Together, we choose the right format: an Intro session, a 90-day pilot, a 5-day training program, or a 12-month partnership. We map how MI and stages of change will show up in your real processes.

03

Practice

Staff learn by doing. Through demos, role-plays, skills labs, and coaching, your team practices on real cases and builds confidence using MI skills in their day-to-day work.

04

Sustain

We support you with follow-up coaching, simple tools (playbooks, checklists, stage-check scripts), and a system-wide playbook for larger partnerships so the work continues after the training ends.
